Electronic tagging of prisoners may not reduce prisoner numbers in Ireland, the Irish Penal Reform Trust (IPRT) has warned today.
It emerged recently that the Irish Prison Service (IPS) is planning to use the tags on low-risk prisoners.
The IPS has placed an advertising on the Government’s e-tenders website seeking the services of a company that can supply them.
Head of the IPRT, Liam Herrick [pictured], admitted that tagging could be useful in some areas, however.
“In Canada, for example, it’s used as an alternative to halfway-house-type remedies,” he said.
“There definitely it can serve a very useful function.”
