A fire which killed an elderly widow and her daughter in Northern Ireland was started deliberately, the PSNI have said.

Betty McGirr, 71, and Deirdre McGirr, 38, died when the blaze ripped through their top-floor flat in Dunlea Vale, Dungannon, Tyrone.

It is understood Mrs McGirr, who lived nearby and had recently suffered from a stroke, was visiting her daughter when the fire started at around 10 pm.

A third person, who is Portuguese and understood to be Miss McGirr’s partner, escaped unhurt.

The PSNI are appealing to anyone who noticed any unusual activity in the area or who has any information to contact them.
