A man’s body has been recovered from Castletown River, Dundalk today.
The body was taken from the river at around 10.15 am this morning.
Gardaí believe it is the body of John Tiernan, who went missing from his home on Christmas Eve.
The 69-year-old was last seen at his home in Fr Murray Park, Dundalk, Louth on December 24, 2011.
Gardaí are not treating the death as suspicious.
A 70-year-old pensioner in Ravensdale Close, Kimmage, Dublin 12 has been fatally stabbed.
The man was stabbed in the chest in retirement flat ran by Dublin City Council at around 2 pm.
The man was found by Dublin Fire Brigade after they were alerted to a fire in the flat.
The scene has been sealed off for a forensic investigation and an examination by State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy.
A spokeswoman said: “The council would like to extend its sympathies to the family of the deceased involved and will assist the gardai with any investigation.”
Dublin Fire Brigade said two crews from Dolphins Barn found the man after they controlled and contained the fire inside the small flat.
It is believed the fire was started to destroy any evidence inside.
Local councillor Ruairi McGinley said the small flat complex was usually a very quiet area.
“It will be a surprise and a shock for the people there,” said Mr McGinley, of Fine Gael.
“Many of them are very elderly and are 80 years and upwards.
“You certainly wouldn’t expect anything like that there. People wouldn’t be walking through it.
“My sympathies go out to the man’s family and his friend.”
Two men robbed a bookmakers in Castleblayney last night.
The incident occured at around 7 pm on Main Street. The men were masked and it is reported they were carrying a handgun and baseball bat.
The men fled the scene in what is believed to be a blue Nissan car with an undisclosed amount of cash after emptying the contents of the cash register.
No one was injured in the course of the raid.
Gardaí in Tallaght are looking to trace the whereabouts of Maryam Moustafa.
Moustafa, 17, was last seen in the Tallaght area on January 3.
She is described as being 5’6″ with brown eyes and of medium build.

Gardaí are requesting the public’s assistance in finding 17-year-old Jessica Mooney who was last seen around O’Connell Street, Dublin on Monday, January 2.
The teenager is described as being of medium build, 5’4″ with brown shoulder length hair, blue eyes, and a pale complexion.
When last seen, she was wearing a white long-sleeved top with dark leggings and was carrying a holdall bag.

A Dublin solicitor who stole more than €9,000 from a woman, has today been given time to come up with compensation.
Liam Davis of Avondale Lawn, Blackrock has been remanded on bail at Dublin District Court.
Wearing a suit and tie, solicitor Liam Davis remained silent during today’s brief court appearance.
Last October, he pleaded guilty to stealing €9,259 in stamp duty from Martina Mulligan on February 8, 2007.
The details of the offence have yet to be heard, but the prosecution and defence today agreed to adjourn sentencing until May 25.
The solicitor has been given time to come up with compensation for his victim, but the State has indicated it will not consent to any further adjournment.
Judge Timothy Lucey has remanded Liam Davis on bail.
A man believed to be in his 20s has been rushed to Mid Western Regional Hospital following a stabbing in Newham Street today.
The incident occurred at around 11.30 am.
His condition is said to be serious.
Gardaí at Dundalk are seeking the public’s assistance in tracing the whereabouts of 20-year-old Gavin Sheelan of Annaloughan, Louth.
Sheehan was last seen at his home at 8am on the morning of last Tuesday, January 3 and has not been seen since.
He is described as being 5’11” in height, of thin build, with brown hair and blue eyes.
When last seen he was wearing a black jacket, woollen hat, blue jeans and runners.
A 25-year-old is due to appear before Dun Laoghaire District Court this morning in connection with the attempted robbery of an An Post branch in Arklow.
Gardaí have released information that Monica Riordan, missing since December 20, is now known to have walked along Macken Street from the railway bridge to the junction with Pearse Street.
Gardaí say she seems disorientated and confused.
